The Energy Transition at the HZDR Research Campus: From Feasibility Study to Sustainable Energy Infrastructure

The photovoltaic project at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) laid the foundation for a sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply for the research campus. In future, the systems will generate approximately 1.4 GWh of electricity per year, covering around six per cent of the campus’s energy requirements.

At an early stage of the project, wpw supported the initiative with a comprehensive feasibility study. This included analysing the potential for renewable electricity generation, developing suitable system concepts and assessing their technical and economic feasibility. Particular attention was given to integrating the photovoltaic systems into the existing energy supply infrastructure of the sensitive research environment.

Based on the findings of the feasibility study, wpw carried out the detailed planning, focusing on energy yield optimisation and technical feasibility. The integration of the photovoltaic systems required close coordination between energy supply, grid connection, control technology and the requirements of ongoing research operations.

A distinctive feature of the project is the PV-Movers in the campus entrance area. The tracking modules automatically adjust their position according to the sun, increasing energy yield. At the same time, they make innovative energy technologies visible and tangible to visitors and campus users.

By combining feasibility analysis with integrated planning, the project developed an energy concept that goes beyond electricity generation alone. It strengthens the site’s energy independence, creates a basis for future development and supports the HZDR’s long-term climate protection objectives.

With the gradual commissioning of the systems, the concept is now being put into practice. The project demonstrates how thorough analysis and integrated planning can create sustainable energy solutions that combine technical innovation, economic efficiency and environmental responsibility.
