The Energy Transition at the HZDR Research Campus: From Feasibility Study to Sustainable Energy Infrastructure

The photovoltaic project at the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf laid the foundation for a sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply for the research campus. In the future, the systems will generate approximately 1.4 GWh of electricity per year, covering about six percent of the campus’s energy needs.

Early in the project, we supported the initiative with a comprehensive feasibility study. As part of this, we analyzed the potential for renewable electricity generation, developed suitable plant designs, and assessed their technical and economic feasibility. Particular attention was paid to integrating the system into the existing energy supply of this sensitive research facility.

On this basis, we took over the detailed planning, focusing on yield optimization and feasibility. Integrating the photovoltaic systems required close coordination between energy supply, grid connection, control technology, and the requirements of ongoing research operations.

A distinctive feature of the project is the PV-Movers located in the campus entrance area. The tracking modules automatically adjust to the sun’s position, thereby increasing energy yield. At the same time, they make innovative energy technologies visible and tangible.

By combining a feasibility study with comprehensive planning, an energy concept was developed that goes beyond mere electricity generation. It strengthens the site’s independence, lays the foundation for future developments, and supports the HZDR’s long-term climate protection goals.

With the gradual commissioning of the facilities, the concept is now becoming a reality. The project demonstrates how thorough analysis and integrated planning can lead to sustainable energy solutions that combine technical innovation, economic efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
